ExpectingThe 'don't have sex on the first date because it leads to babies' episode.
This one starts out as funny as any comedy episode. Cordy is young and carefree with the filing, wes is bored and has word puzzle 3d and an axe, he becomes embarassed in front of girls, he makes it look like he and angel are a gay couple, then they go kill some demons, in the wrong house. All good stuff. Angel is known for being a horror/supernatural show, but with scenes like this it's funnier than most sitcoms.
Cordy suddenly has a couple of friends who are never seen or mentioned before or after this episode, and they take her to a party where she's arranged to meet some guy and goes on a (slightly boring to watch) date. She takes him back to her place, and phantom dennis tries to kill the mood. I always enjoy 'seeing' dennis appear on the show, and I think this is the first time he's been seen since his first appearance, though I'm not sure.
Cordy wakes up the next morning heavily pregnant, with the guy gone. Angel and wes show up, concerned. I suppose cordy must have a sewer entrance right on her front doorstep to allow angel to get to her house at daytime. Anyway, they realise a demon is behind this, and angel decides to look for the guy while wes takes cordy to the hospital.
I liked cordy and wes pretending they were from england, and their reaction to discovering she was having seven demon babies, though I felt their made up name of 'painbourne' was a bit cheesy. Cordy being filled with acid that burns through the floor was nice and dramatic, though it didn't make a whole lot of sense. Neither did cordy suddenly being concerned that her babies were healthy, only moments after being happy to take a procedure that could cause a miscarraige. I realise she was becoming posessed by the demons, but it seemed a bit sudden.
Angel finds out cordy's friend is pregnant too and returns, to find cordy drinking blood. He says it's disgusting, though that line doesn't really work for me, not after all the times we've seen blood being drunk straight from a person's neck. Watching someone drink blood sloppily from a bottle doesn't really compare. Also, since I'm nitpicking anyway, if cordy might give birth at any moment, why is she wearing dungarees? I wouldn't have thought she'd even own dungarees.
Angel confronts the five guys who have been sleeping with women to get the demon sperm passed on to them. How did the demon sperm get into the five guys to begin with? Cue a cool fight scene, as angel gets shot then instantly recovers and reveals he's a vampire (awesome), and takes on all five guys at once. It's especially satisfying knowing how much these guys deserve to get their asses kicked. I'd much rather see angel beat up guys like this then random demons and vamps he'd just run into.
I also liked the line “Welcome to Los Angeles. There are worse things to be in business with”. A reference to wolfram and hart, maybe?
Wesley followed cordy to where she and the other pregnant women are preparing to give birth. For some reason the scene where the ladies put the robes on cordy reminded me of the scene from 'out of sight out of mind' when cordy's friends dress her up.
Then we see the monster... and it's huge! It doesn't really make sense that a demon that big could exist without being seen, and no doubt there are other giant demons of the same species out there too. Does it live in that abandoned factory? What's more, the lip synching is terrible. And why is it called a hacksaw demon, what does it have to do with hacksaws? Why do the pregnang women need to be in water, in robes? Why would wesley take such a big risk in getting so close to the demon? Angel could have thrown the tank and fired the gun himself. Where did angel get the liquid nitrogen tank anyway? And it's a bit dodgy that the plan relied on the demon catching the tank and not throwing it away straight away, and what's more the tank must have landed pointing upward so the demon would be continue to be hit by the blast, which fortunately it was. And why would killing the demon make the babies vanish? Will all those women remember everything that happened to them?
^ But none of those nitpicks matter, because the demon was huge! That alone is enough coolness to balance out the plotholes.
Two days later everything is back to normal, and cordy thanks angel and wesley, and makes wes cry (another funny moment). You'd think she would have thanked them straight after the demon died, and she stopped being possessed. I guess they just went home in silence.
Overall I loved this episode. There was comedy all the way through, more than the normal amount of cool moments, and metaphor stories are usually good anyway (and all too rare on angel). And even though there were quite a few faults and plotholes, they were all very minor and didn't detract from my enjoyment of the episode. It's an underrated episode that's as good now as it always was.
I give it a low 8.
