I dont think her parents were dead. Faith said the vampire killed her watcher, surely if it had killed her family too she would have mentioned it? Faith's mother was dead, she mentions it in Faith, Hope and Trick when beating on a vampire (the dialogue's a bit hard to hear over the fight music and FX, but it's there). I doubt Faith ever had a father figure, so I'd guess deadbeat dad (hence the significance of her later relationship with the Mayor). We'll never know. I still think Joss should have spun off a show about Faith. That really would have been interesting. Like I said in the Spike/Illyria thread, it's hard to see what could have been done with Faith in a spin-off. Between Faith, Hope and Trick and Sanctuary, everything that could be said with that character was said. The Buffyverse could probably do without another character on a mission for redemption.

Faith said to a vamp 'my dead mother hits harder than that', or something similar, but she never said her mother was killed by vampires.

i loved faith's character because it made buffy see all things in faith that she didn't want to see in herself. The love of killing demons and vampire, the love for the hunt, the h & h theory...lol. Faith was a cool character and i was sad when she was put into a coma at the end of season 3.

I love the h & h theory. I seem to remember an episode in season 6 where dawn says buffy is always hungry after a fight... could it be buffy like faith gets horny too, and is keeping it a secret?

Heh, she didn't keep it much of a secret from the audience in S6. If I had to sit through one more cringeworthy Spuffy sex scene, I think I'd have gouged my eyes out! But I'd imagine Buffy would never admit the H&h to her friends - she is quite a bit conservative and Puritan when it comes to sex and guilt and those things entwined.

I saw the episode yesterday. "My dead mother hits harder than that" is more or less what she says, before that other vamp says that Kakistos line that Buffy cant wrap her head around. The point is that her mother is dead. Although she did care for her, at least thats the impression I got when she told the mayor that her mother called her a firecracker. She didnt seem to show the same sorrow as when she talked about her watcher being killed. There's always the possibillity that her mom's a vegetable and Faith just thinks of her as dead.

I really love Faith. For me, I always loved her. It didn't matter what she did because she was an alternative to Buffy. When Faith was introduced we had Xander, Willow, Cordelia and Oz... none of which really had the whole Slayer skill. So having another fighter was great.
I really think that they could have done A LOT more with Faith and it's a shame they didn't. She could have been a great addition to the Scooby Gang.

I really wish we could have gotten a Faith spin-off with all the material that could have been covered with her. We knew little to nothing about her past which we only picked up in small comments and like we are doing here, have to make guesses as to what her childhood was really like.
Here's my take on Faith's past before Sunnydale:
I think that Faith as a child, only had a mother. Her father probably left when she was very young or before she was born. In Enemies, Faith mentions how her mother was too busy with the drinking and passing out parts of life to really pay any attention to her. The drinking could have been an effect of Faith's father leaving. If I were to guess how Faith's mother died, I'm thinking not a supernatural death but something to do with her alcoholism when Faith was very young.
Something else I've picked up lately is it might be possible that she was abused after her mother died by whoever took care of her. Her line in "Consequences" somewhat suggests that.
Angel: No, I just wanna talk to you.
Faith: That's what they all say. And then it's just, 'Lemme stay the night. Won't try anything.'
Then after years of that going on, Faith was called. Her watcher would have taken her in and tried to help her as much as possible. But Faith, finding this newfound strength she has, is going to use it. She had so much bottled up rage and anger. Her jealousy of Buffy, IMO, comes from seeing that Buffy didn't have to grow up like Faith did. She and Buffy shared the same abilities and yet Buffy didn't have to suffer her whole life growing up to have those abilities.
Just my take. I love analyzing Faith. She's by far the most interesting character that we know the least about.

Hmm I pictured buffy's family life the same way.
I always imagined faith used to have friends in school, but left them to become a full time slayer, and it really annoys her that buffy was allowed to keep her friends and normal life, buffy gets to keep everything faith sacrificed to become a good slayer, and buffy's the one getting the praise. Thats why faith hates buffy.

That does sound like a possibility, only Faith even mentions she didn't really have any friends before.
Faith: You guys are a hoot and a half. If I'd had friends like you in high school, I... probably still would've dropped out. But I might've been sad about it, you know?
