Well we knew she was buffy's sister right from her first appearance in buffy vs dracula. When buffy first walked into the room and saw her I was right there with buffy on the 'what are you doing here?' comment, but that didn't last long. They didn't give you time to ask who she was beforee revealing she was buffy's sister.

that's true... there was no time to actually figure out who Dawn was before the whole "take your sister with you"... "but mom!" exchange

Well I definitely had absolutely no idea for about a second. And that was how long that lasted.

What about during the gap between Buffy Vs Dracula and No Place Like Home? What thoughts did anyone have on what and who Dawn really was? Or did everyone just think she was Buffy's 100% normal biological sister?

I was a little confused since I had remembered many past eps where buffy was said to be an only child. I hoped they were going somewhere with this new character, and it turn out they were. I loved the whole just-been-created aspect to dawn. And the whole scene when buffy goes into a trance and sees dawn's room turn into the spare room and vanishes from pictures was cool. But after that mystery was solved, I couldn't help but wonder, 'ok is this little kid gonna be in the show all the time from now on? How is that a good thing?'

Well I thought that Buffy knew she was definitely her sister, and since it was at the end of an ep and not the beginning I thought they were going somewhere full-seasonlike with it, but I definitely didnt think she was her biological sister. Being BuffytVS it had to be something supernatural. There was just no way the writers would be stupid enough to stick a new sister in there with no explanation.

I didn't watch it until Barganing, so I already knew about Dawn. Then I watched Tough Love through the gift. But, If I did watch it then, I would be confused.

I thought Dawn was a great concept, but I always wondered if she was flawed. She's harnessed energy that can tear the dimensional planes, but she only does that once because of the ritual and so forth. I always wondered what would happen if she became unstable. Was there more to her than just that point in time? Could she do more than just whine all the time?

Dawn was absolutely, 100% flawed in application of concept and character design. She was the teen to bring in young teen girls, no more, no less. It would have been great if she'd had more than one personality dimension.

It didn't really make sense that she could only be used as a key and unlock the dimensions at just the one time. It was all forced plot point to raise the stakes and make glory more determined, other wise she'd be all 'oh well dawn got away, I'll just try again next year', it was done to add to the drama. I would have loved a storyline about dawn discovering she was able to open dimensions any time she wants, but unfortunatly after s5 dawn became nothing more than a tag along, the fact she was a key was never really brought up again.
Heres a question: What would happen if dawn were to die? Would she turn back into the key, and if so could glory have simply killed dawn and extracted the key part of her and used it? Or would the key part of her have been destroyed along with her body/soul? Does she even have a soul, or was she just a key in a body, created by magic?
