This was another fun episode. There were loads of humorous scenes, such as fred and wesley drunk, angel pretending to be brooding so he can watch hockey, and I laughed out loud at “Milk dud?” “Said with affection!” And the hulk version of lorne was cool. The only problem with the episode was that it was almost nothing but fun. Aside from minor developments in the fred/wesley/knox triangle, the only part of the episode with any emotion behind it was seeing lorne being overworked. This in the same episode that lorne admits that he doesn’t do much in the company (and certainly we hardly ever see him do much throughout season 5), he was upset that he doesn’t bring much to the cause and was excited to do the party because it was something he could do. So we are meant to feel sorry for him both for having little to contribute and for being overworked (at this one-time party at least). That said, I did end up sympathizing with him, though it’s hardly the most emotion-driven episode the show has ever made. We did also get a set up for future episodes- an appearance of the archduke, and a mention of the fell brethren, both of which will play a bigger part at the end of the season. And it was interesting to see angel bend the ‘having sex makes you loose your soul’ rule, as it turns out he can have sex so long as he’s possessed. And I enjoyed angel and eve bringing up the fact that neither one of them seems to have a last name. Overall the entertainment factor was high, and that’s enough for me to give this episode a 7. But a little more on the emotional side, or perhaps just more grounding in reality, would have brought my rating higher.
